Manipur contractors begin blockade
Accusing the rural development ministry of corruption, the contractors’ organisation alleged that of the 10 contracts given out under the Prime Minister’s Gramin Sadak Yojana in the district, eight had gone to contractors from other districts.
The association blamed rural development minister Md Allauddin Khan and his engineers for the irregularities, a charge the minister denied. Khan said his ministry was not bound by any rule that said contracts could not be given to outsiders.
The economic blockade followed a 48-hour Senapati district bandh on July 7 and 8. The association said it would continue with its protests if the government remained indifferent to the matter even after the economic blockade.
The association demanded that the work orders be cancelled and issued to local contractors. It also demanded that the rural development portfolio be given to another minister.
The economic blockade, however, failed to have any impact as supply trucks continued to ply with security escorts from Imphal to Mao. There was no report of any untoward incident on the first day of the blockade.
Superintendent of police Nishit Kumar Ujjwal said over the phone that security measures were tightened along the highway in view of the blockade. The SP said apart from providing security escorts in Manipur, he had made other arrangements with his Nagaland counterpart to ensure the safety of the truckers.
The army is not happy with the arrest of KNA Leader
Seikhojang Haokip alias Robert, the army chief of KNA, was arrested by Manipur police from Imphal airport on Saturday, shortly before he was about to board a Delhi-bound flight.
The KNA is one of several Kuki militant groups in Manipur that entered into a suspension of operation agreement with the army in August 2005 to pave the way for holding peace talks.
Other Kuki militant groups that accepted the suspension of operation agreement are the Kuki Revolutionary Army, Kuki National Front (Military Council), Kuki National Front (Zougam), Kuki National Front (President), United Kuki Liberation Front and Kuki Liberation Army.
The truce will expire on July 31.
The arrest has come at a time when the defence ministry officials and top army officers, both in Manipur and Delhi, are trying to extend the arrangement.
Though neither the 57th Mountain Division nor the inspector general (South) Assam Rifles here has made any official reaction to the arrest, reliable sources said the army is “upset” about the development.
“The army could not understand the logic behind the arrest. The arrest could derail the Centre’s effort to hold talks with the tribal militant groups,” a source close to the army said.
The KNA has also refrained from reacting to the arrest. The Kuki militant groups have, in the past, accused the Ibobi Singh government of trying to sabotage the peace process.
The Manipur government has been refusing to buy the arrangement made between the army and the Kuki militant groups, maintaining that there is no ground rule for the suspension of operations.
While announcing the arrest on Saturday, the police said Robert was arrested because the state government does not recognise the suspension of operations. The rebel leader is now in police custody.
The KNA army chief was reportedly headed for Delhi to meet defence ministry officials to hold talks about furthering the suspension of operation. Sources said the KNA army chief was summoned to Delhi for talks as the army was finding it difficult to keep the KNA militants under control.
“The Ibobi Singh cabinet discussed the Centre’s proposal for framing ground rules earlier this month and chief minister Ibobi Singh agreed to accept the suspension of operation in principle. The state government is also working on setting up designated camps. Given this backdrop, the arrest defied logic,” the source said.
Manipur’s Ranidevi toys with Hemalata

A silver medallist in the 2007 National Games at Guwahati, Ranidevi produced a display that belied her height and physique as she overcame P. Hemalata of Andhra Pradesh 20-10 in the flyweight category of the 11th SRM-Federation Cup boxing championship, which began at the SRMUniversity Campus, Kattankulathur near here on Monday.
Rani used the left uppercut to deadly effect against a hapless Hemalatha. Hardly did Ranidevi do anything wrong. Ranidevi showed excellent alacrity to move herself away from the jabs from Hemalatha threw at her. Facing Ranidevi in the semifinals will be Chhotu Loura, a 23-year-old from Railway Sports Promotion Board. A bronze medalist in the last year’s World championship in India, Loura scripted a convincing 20-5 win over another International Kavita Rani of Kerala.
Loura put her height to clever use. Kavita had no answer to Loura’s powerful jabs.
Ghulam Ghouse of Jharkhand put it across G. Senthilnathan of Tamil Nadu 27-21.
The local boy gave a semblance of fight in the first and third rounds. In the fourth and final round, Ghouse was on rampage as the 18-year-old, a trainee of Tata Steel Training Centre in Jamshedpur, threw more punches than Senthilnathan could.
In another battle that was cheered lustily by the spectators, Komal M Yadav (SSCB) beat Mahesh of Haryana in a close finish (24-19).
The results (quarterfinals):
Men: Lightfly category: M. Zawhly (SSCB) bt Amit Kumar(Chd) 25-13; Fly: Ghulam Ghouse (Jhar) bt G. Senthilnathan (TN) 27-21; bantam: Komal M Yadav (SSCB) bt Mahesh (Har) 24-19.
Women: Flyweight category: Ch. Lata Ranidevi (Man) bt P. Hemalata (AP) 20-10; Chhotu Loura (RSPB) bt KavitaRani (Ker) 20-5.

Manipuri Girls at Judo
Judo, like soccer, translates into a path out of economic problems for state’s girls
Navneet Singh
New Delhi, June 29: That Manipur girls are a dominant force in the country’s sporting scenario, whether it is soccer, or combat events, is now an open secret. Now even the art of defence is in their grip.
In recent times girls from the North-Eastern state have completely overshadowed their rivals in judo. That is one reason why as many as five out of six girls in the national squad are from Manipur.
Experts’ opinions differ on such success rates, but players feel it’s got more to do with ‘inspiration’.
National level judo coach Satish Sharma was of the view that the body structure of the girls in Manipur has to do a lot when it comes to judo. “Their hardy life-style in the formative years makes them strong. The physical fitness proves to be extremely helpful when learning skills of judo. The overall strength is easily used to advantage on the mat while fighting their rivals,” said Sharma
He also said the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in the region has contributed in tapping talent. “Those who are good make the grade have got access to good training,” he said.
Then there is this ‘inspiration’ theory. Success in judo has led to many girls getting the opportunity to get good jobs in the paramilitary forces particularly in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). That has encouraged more girls back home to take the sporting route to improve their socio-economic status.
Says Brojeshwari Devi, Sydney Olympic Games quarter finalist: “Seeing my performance back home many more wanted to join the sport. The real breakthrough comes when you join the national camp. There is more exposure and more facilities. Coming into the mainstream and getting a job also helps a lot.”
In her formative years she had passion for kabaddi. The basic rules of the game matched her guts for a hard tackle. “I had good grip and helped my team win almost all the points in the match,” she recalls. In 1992 she was encouraged to take up judo. It aptly matched her mind and temperament. Thereafter, she didn’t look back. After eight years of hard work, she entered the quarter finals of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Her good performance also helped her to get a job in CRPF.
Tombi Devi followed Brojeshwari’s footseps. When she had a choice between volleyball and judo she opted for latter.
It worked out well and she was national champion in the 48kg category. Her strong but diminutive frame has helped her dominate the national scene.
She joined CRPF in 2000 to add strength to the team. The path shown by the national champions, says Brojeshwari, is indeed helping many youngsters take the sporting route to success.
